TOEFL iBT Listening Section

The TOEFL iBT Listening section measures your ability to understand spoken English in modern learning environments. The tasks reflect the kinds of listening you may do in classrooms, lectures, and other university situations.

Instead of long listening sets, the Listening section uses short, focused audio clips that allow you to demonstrate how well you understand meaning, organization, and speaker intent.

Listening skills are measured using two task types:

• Listen and Choose a Response
  You will listen to a spoken prompt and choose the most appropriate response. This task measures your ability to understand meaning, intent, and common patterns of spoken English used in academic settings.
• Listen to a Conversation
  You will listen to a conversation primarily related to campus life. This task measures your understanding of main ideas, key details, speaker intent, and implied meaning.
• Listen to an Announcement
  You will listen to an announcement in an academic or campus setting. This task measures your ability to understand the speaker’s purpose, key information, implied meaning, and likely next actions.
• Listen to an Academic Talk
  You will listen to a short academic talk given by a professor or expert. This task measures your ability to understand main ideas, supporting details, organization, inferences, and sometimes uncommon or idiomatic vocabulary.

What to Expect

• Audio clips are concise and focused, helping you stay engaged and manage your time effectively.
• Topics come from a range of academic fields, and no background knowledge is required.
• You can take notes while listening to help you answer the questions.
• You may hear native-speaker English accents from North America, the U.K., New Zealand, or Australia, reflecting the variety of English used in academic environments.

This section is designed to reflect real-world academic listening while giving you a clear and fair way to show your English listening skills.
